4-23-11

An abundance of race cars checked through the pit gates at the Boone Speedway on Saturday night–223 strong.   The fans were treated to great racing action in all five divisions  the entire night.   One driver would win for the third straight week and others would see Victory Lane for the first time.

The Dwarf/Mod Lites started the main event action with their 15-lap feature.  Charlie Brown dominated the race as he took the lead early on,

never to relinquish it.  Joel Huggins had chased Brown many of the laps, only to lose the runner up spot on the last lap to Josh May.  With May coming home in second, and Huggins in third, fourth would go to last week’s winner, Andy Hennigar, and Cory Dennis finished in fifth.

A great field of IMCA Northern SportMods were on hand as 62 cars competed.  This required three B mains in order to complete the A main starting field of 24 cars.  Those consolation wins went to David Schlicht, Brandon Leeman and Scott Davis.  Adam Shelman led the feature

through halfway of the 18-lap contest with Austin Lucas hot on his heels.  The car really on the move though, was that of Kyle Brown who had started back in 16th spot.  Brown consistently made his way forward and with two laps to go, was leading the field.  Brown made his way to Victory Lane for the first time ever at the Boone Speedway and Lucas took the second spot over Nick Roberts in third, Joel Rust in fourth and Jesse Sobbing in fifth.  Shelman, the early leader,  fell back to capture sixth place.

Thirty-nine IMCA modifieds came to play at the track and with that number of cars, two B mains were required.  Dustin Smith debuted his leap from stock car into the modified ranks, by taking the first consy race.  Mike VanGenderen, “The Flying Dutchman” took the win in the second B main.  Josh Most and Todd Shute put on a show for the top spot as Most ran low and Shute chose the highline of the track.  Shute grabbed the lead and with a lap to go, Most lost the handle and spun in turn two.

Forty-five IMCA stock cars had to be whittled down to a 24-car starting feature by running two B mains.  Those winners were Ned Kalis from Wells, Minnesota and Jay Schmidt.  Michael Jaennette took command of the pack with a handful of laps remaining, and took the win over the always hard charging Donavon Smith in second and Robert Stofer in third.  Fourth went to Jay Schmidt who had qualified through a B main and fifth was David Smith.

The IMCA hobby stocks ran two A mains to close out the night’s racing.  The first contest saw the familiar face of Michael Murphy take the checkers for the third straight week.  Murphy bested Hans Houfek, driver from Emmerson, Nebraska who took the second spot.  Third was John Watson, fourth went to Curt Reed and fifth was Kyle Dirks.  The finale race for the hobby stocks was dominated by Lake City’s Devin Smith as he cruised to victory.  Second place went to Tony Cox, third to Ray Stock, Jr., fourth to Eric Stanton and Donnie Gustoff came home in fifth.

Boone Speedway will be back in action again next Saturday night, with hot laps at 6:45 and racing at 7:30.  Make plans to attend.
