Ten different feature winners at Boone

May 28, 2011

Ten different drivers took home the hardware from the Boone Speedway Saturday night.  The fans were treated to four make-up features from last week’s rain-shortened program, plus six features from the regular night’s show.

The night’s action started off with the running of all of last week’s make-up features and the first of two A’s for the hobby stocks were first on the track.  Eric Stanton pushed his #7B to the front early from starting mid-pack and never looked back.  Stanton took the win easily over Nyle Godwin in second and Matt McDonald took the third spot.  Fourth went to Curt Reed and Andrew Arends finished in fifth.

The second make-up feature for the hobby stocks saw no stranger to victory lane as  Michael Murphy won for the fifth time this year.  John Watson would lead the entire race except for that final lap when Murphy made the pass and got to the checkers first.  Following Watson who finished second, for a third place spot, was Tyler Pickett, fourth went to Shaun Wirtz and Matt Hudspeth was fifth.

The make-up A modified lined up next for their 20-lap feature.  Mike VanGenderen, “The Flying Dutchman”, pretty well dominated the race with Randy Havlik making it interesting with a challenge or two.  VanGenderen wasn’t to be denied, and would nab his first feature win of the year.  Havlik finished a close second, third went to Jake Durbin, Mike Molle finished in fourth and Cale Sponsler rounded out the top five.

The final make-up feature, the IMCA stock cars, found a driver who has had a win slip away from him more than once this year, finally taste victory.  Eric Brown saw that checkered flag fly first tonight and grabbed his first win of the season.  Trent Murphy took the runner-up spot ahead of Wayne Gifford in third, Josh Daniels in fourth and Donavon Smith in fifth.

After a farming session, the regular night’s heat races and b-mains were run and then it was time for feature racing once again. The MADCRA Dwarf/Mod Lites ran first.  It was a close contest between winner and runner-up, but Colby Oberembt fought off the challenges of Josh May to take his second win of the year.  May took second over Tim Hennigar in third, Randy Bryan in fourth and James May in fifth.

The IMCA Northern SportMods saw Geoff Olson grab his first win of 2011 at the Boone Speedway.  Olson snatched the lead away from point leader Scott Davis on the white flag lap and got to savor victory lane.  Davis took second over Bill Wears in third, Rick Ringgenberg in fourth and Ty Luellen was fifth.

The IMCA modifieds ran their second feature of the night next.  It was looking to be a double-up night for Mike VanGenderen as he set sail on the topside but a late restart would be his undoing.  Josh “Happy” Gilman would see an opportunity open up at the drop of the green restart and make the pass on VanGenderen.  Gilman took the win, his second of the year, with VanGenderen having to settle for second.  Third went to Craig Carlson, fourth was Russ Dickerson and Denny Pittman took fifth.

The 18-lap IMCA stock car feature was won by veteran driver Larry Crocheck.  Crocheck led the entire race.  Cory Bushnell chased Crocheck across the line to grab second place.  Third and fourth went to Trent Murphy and Jay Schmidt respectively, and Ryan Rose rounded out the top five.

Two hobby stock features concluded the night’s racing action.  The first feature saw another veteran driver, Dean Hartwig, make it back to the winner’s circle for the second time this year.  Randy Embrey shot through the field to garner a second place finish with John Watson chasing him to take third.  Fourth went to Eric Stanton and Dustin Tepp was fifth.

The second hobby stock A main went Des Moines driver, Danny Watson as he finished ahead of Michael Murphy in a close second.  Third was Richard Yaw II, followed by Scott Lograsso in fourth and Nyle Godwin in fifth.

Next up at the Boone Speedway will be the Deery Brothers Late Model Summer Series on Monday, May 30th.  The “Boys of Summer” will visit the track for their annual Memorial Day show.  Joining them will be the IMCA stock cars, IMCA Northern SportMods, IMCA hobby stocks, and the Dwarf/Mod Lites.  Hot laps are scheduled for 4 p.m. with racing at 5 p.m.  Then again next Saturday, June 4, it will be Pepsi Cola and Soccer Night at the speedway for another night of regular season racing in all divisions.
