Sponsler takes the checkers in modifieds at Boone

August 6, 2011

The drivers and fans won out against Mother Nature on Saturday night at the Boone Speedway.  Threatening weather moving into the area moved the program along quickly and the usual farming session was eliminated.  Two new winners on the season came out of the stock car and hobby stock classes, while the modified, SportMod and Dwarf classes were repeaters.

The threatening sky brought the first feature, the Dwarf/Mod Lites, to the track immediately after the final b-main.  Unfortunately, it got off to a slow start when two red flags flew in the first couple of laps.  Ed Zehm rolled his ride coming out of turn four, and a lap after the restart, Joel Keenan put  his car on it’s  lid at the top of turn one.  Both drivers were okay.

When action resumed, Joel Huggins was the leader.  He would keep that lead to the checkers, taking his second win in as many weeks.  He fought off the challenges of second place finisher, Andy Hennigar for most of the race.  Third place went to point leader Josh May, fourth to Randy Bryan, and Mike Kennedy completed the top five.

The IMCA Northern SportMod 18-lap feature was marred by several caution flags.  Eric Elliott survived the many on track incidents and took the win, his third of the 2011 season.  Clint Luellen finished second with Racer Hulin a close third.  Fourth was Austin Lucas and fifth, point leader Scott Davis.

The scheduled 20-lap IMCA Modified feature would end under a time limit.  This race was also plagued with yellow flags flying

as well as a red flag when Kelly Lyons rolled.  Lyons was okay.  Veteran Denny Pittman led the early portion of the race.  Cale Sponsler had been making his way forward, getting into second position, and after a restart situation was able to make the pass for the lead. Sponsler would then maintain that lead, and take his second win of the year–his first coming on opening night of the 2011 season back on April 9th.  Jake Durbin finished in second, Fred Schimmels took third, Randy Havlik fourth and point leader Russ Dickerson took fifth.

Damon Murty went home with his first win of the year in the IMCA Stock Car class.  Murty battled to the lead by lap eight, being chased the rest of the way to the finish by Alan VanGorp, who finished second.  Trent Murphy came from starting thirteenth to take third place, fourth was Eric Brown and Robert Stofer rounded out the top five.

The IMCA Hobby Stock 12-lap feature put another new name in the record book for 2011.  Cory Tasler led all 12-laps of the feature to take the win, with second place finisher Tony Cox giving chase most of those laps.  John Watson finished in third, point leader Michael Murphy was fourth, and Aaron Rudolph finished fifth.

Join us back at the Boone Speedway next Saturday night, August 13th, for another night of exciting racing action in all five divisions.  Hot laps are 6:45 with racing at 7:30.
