Darrel DeFrance was the recipient of a special award before racing got underway, a wreath of 400 one dollar bills … one for each of the consecutive events he’s competed at in the Deery Brothers Summer Series.
DeFrance reached the milestone at Sunday’s Pepsi USA Nationals at 34 Raceway. After the presentation, made in the Air Force Fan Zone south of the main grandstand, DeFrance signed autographs and chatted with fans.
Ironically, he was one of the last drivers signing in to race at the 401st Late Model tour event. DeFrance’s hauler broke down in Ames, so both that vehicle and his trailer had to be towed the rest of the way.
“Every time something breaks down, it’s going to Boone or coming from Boone,” lamented DeFrance, who’d suffered a similar malady as recently as a couple years ago.
