Abbey goes North in SportMods

Defending national champion and current Smiley’s Racing Chassis Southern SportMod point leader Dean Abbey is trying out a Northern SportMod at Boone.

He got caught up in a multi-car tangle in his qualifying feature on Monday but still had plenty of compliments for the “other” SportMod class.

“I like the Northern SportMods. They’re a bit different that Southern SportMods but I like driving them both,” he said. “They go about the same speed but each has its own feel. The suspension is the biggest difference between the two. I’m used to a metric car.”

Abbey had to change gears, was late getting onto the track and had to start last in the field of 30 for his qualifier.

“We’re starting all over today,” he said.
