The cars packed the pits again at the Boone Speedway on Saturday night. The large crowd watched over 185 cars compete on the night, including the Dirt Trucks trying their hand on the track for the second time this year. A King of the Hill contest for the IMCA Stock Cars was another added event.
Feature racing kicked off with the Mod Lite class and their 15-lap main. Bryan Zehm, who started in row six, took over the helm at lap nine after fighting past Cory Dennis and Travis Stensland. Zehm held the lead to the checkers. Dennis finished as the runner up over Dusty Masolini, who made a late race charge from starting tenth and taking third. Fourth was Travis Stensland and pole sitter Luke Payton completed the top five. This was Zehm’s third feature win at the track this season.
The Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks ran a 15-lap A main in their second appearance at the track this year. Carl Moyer passed his son Bret Moyer in the early laps and pulled away to a sizable lead. That would disappear when a yellow flew at lap thirteen, and bunched up the field. It was Ed Nelson tucked in behind Moyer on the restart, looking for the opportunity for the pass when the race resumed. It wasn’t to be however, as Moyer kept his lead to the checkers flying, sealing the win. Nelson had to be content with second place, third was Pat Fagen, fourth went to Bret Moyer and Rick Clark rounded out the top five.
The IMCA Northern SportMods had a large contingency on hand, requiring two B mains to complete the 24-car starting field. Those B mains were won by Curt Moeding and Ben Kates. The 18-lap feature got off to a poor start when a huge pile up occurred in turn four before one lap had been scored, eliminating several cars. When racing got back under way, it was the 49W of Mason City’s Nate Whitehurst taking the lead. It was but a couple of laps later when another caution flew—again for an incident in turn four. Whitehurst maintained his lead when things got back under way, and pulled away from his competitors who were fighting behind him for position. Randy Roberts and Johnathon Logue went at it for several laps before Logue was able to take command of second place. Whitehurst, in just his second appearance at the track, took the win, followed by Logue and Roberts. Tim Love started back in seventeenth place and finished fourth ahead of Curt Moeding in fifth, who had qualified through a B main.
The IMCA Modifieds had Cayden Carter taking the dominate win. Carter, who started on the front row, took the lead at the drop of the green. Behind him, cars were going four deep at times, in an attempt to make up ground and catch the leader. Carter would have none of that however, keeping
his comfortable lead to the checkers flying. Russ Dickerson got by Kyle Krampe, who had been holding second most of the race, and scored the runner up spot; Krampe taking third. Fourth place went to point leader Jimmy Gustin, who had started in twelve, and Todd Shute made a run from starting tenth, to capture fifth place. This was Carter’s first win at the track this year.
Jeff Deal, Ft. Dodge driver had his #22K up front for most of the 18-lap Stock Car feature. He would see his nice lead evaporate at lap eleven when the yellow flew. When the cars restarted, Jerry Gifford was aligned in second, Jay Schmidt fell in line in third. It was a real dog fight between Deal, Gifford and Schmidt as the laps wound down. Gifford was able to grab the lead, Schmidt following into second, with a lap to go. The race would end under a yellow/checkered when a car sat dangerously in turn two after the leaders had taken the white flag and the race was called complete. Gifford was the winner over Schmidt in the runner up spot. Third went to early leader Jeff Deal, Michael Jaennette started twelfth and finished fourth and Wayne Gifford rounded out the top five. This was Jerry Gifford’s second win of 2013. Earlier, a Stock Car King of the Hill event was held. The final man standing was Jay Schmidt who bested Michael Jaennette for the crown.
For the first time this year, two Hobby Stock features were run. The first feature went to Cody Gustoff. Gustoff lead from the start but had company in Corey Roe and Tim Barber for most of the race. As the cars approached the checkers, Gustoff and Barber were in a real battle for the lead, Gustoff being the victor and taking the win. Barber was second, Roe took third and Dustin Lynch and veteran racer Randy Embrey were fourth and fifth. The race went green to checkers.
The second Hobby Stock feature also went flag to flag. Mike Smith was in command of this one through lap nine. Jacob Keiser, who had started twelfth was able to make his move and nab the lead, continuing the rest of the way to the checkers and the win. Matt Hudspeth finished a close second, followed by point leader Eric Stanton in third, Craig Graham was fourth and Mike Smith fell back to finish fifth.
Next Saturday night, August 31 will be Season Championship night. The top 20 cars in points in attendance will be locked into the feature. The final four cars in each class will be able to qualify through a last chance race if they have raced at the track this season. Then on Monday September 2, the six day run of the 31st IMCA Super Nationals will begin. More details are available at www.raceboone.com/supernationals.
