Boone Speedway kicked off racing Saturday for the first time in 2014 on a beautiful, warm, shirt sleeve night. It was the annual Frostbuster special with the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA SportMods and the IMCA Hobby Stocks on the program. The classes were running for National, Regional and State points, but regular season track points do not start until next week. Mother Nature however, cut the night’s festivities short when the second of two showers ended the show for good.
A heavy rain shower before 7 p.m. halted action. When the rain subsided, the track farming crew got busy and began the task of reworking and repacking the track. The final two B mains were then completed and the first A main came to the track.
The IMCA Northern SportMods got their 20 laps feature in the books before all was halted. It took a B Main to whittle the starting grid of the feature down to 24 cars. Cody Hennings took those honors. Ben Kates, the Tonganoxie, Kansas driver, wasted no time in jumping to the lead immediately in the feature, from his fourth place starting spot. Doug Smith worked his way to the runner up spot from starting eighth, by lap five. Sprinkles began to fall during the race and when a yellow flew at lap 13, many were questioning if they would be able to go the full 20-laps. On the restart, Kates easily maintained his lead, Smith tagging along behind and the final four laps were completed without further interruption. Kates took the win, Smith maintained the runner up spot, third went to Jon Schultz from Waunakee, Wisconsin, Minburn’s Clint Luellen was fourth and Tim Love completed the top five.
As the Modified A feature came to the track, the sky opened up again, and with radar showing more coming, the call was made to cancel the show. However, the final three Frostbuster features in the
Modified, Stock Car and Hobby Stock will be run next Saturday night, April 19, first thing, and then the season points opening night show will be run.
All races in April will have an early starting time. Hot laps are 5, with racing at 6.
