Another year, another title for IMCA SportMod champ Davis
BOONE, Iowa – Scott Davis knows how to win championships. In just eight years in an IMCA SportMod, the local driver earned his fourth straight track championship at Boone Speedway, his fifth overall in the division at the facility.
Despite so much success, Davis didn’t let the expectations get the best of him this season. “I didn’t necessarily feel pressure entering 2012, but I wasn’t sure I’d win it. Eric Elliott led the points until late in the year.”
Not only was Elliott the leader throughout the first half of the season, but Davis was mired in the middle of the pack until he positioned himself to challenge in late June.
Davis found himself behind the leader by 27 points on two separate occasions until he reeled off five straight top-five finishes to close out the month of June. One of his five second place finishes this season came on June 30, putting Davis at the top of the standings for the first time.
It was the following week when Davis earned his first of three victories. “It felt good to get that win,” he admitted.
Obviously, the nights he won were among his most memorable accomplishments of the year, but winning on season championship night was the most special. “I ended the regular season in victory lane,” said Davis. “It was good going into Super Nationals where we won the qualifying feature on Monday night.”
Also a former track champion in the IMCA Stock Car division, Davis isn’t afraid of new challenges. Coming off his last year in the SportMod division, Davis will be moving to the IMCA Modified ranks in 2013.
Although it’s new ground for him, the expectations are similar. “I’m hoping to finish in the top five in points and win a couple of features.”
Smith plans to run Boone weekly in 2013, but other obligations may limit the rest of his schedule. “We will be hit and miss other nights due to the kids playing sports.”
Although those family obligations will affect other race nights next season, expect Davis to again be a factor on Saturday nights.
