BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 5) – Passing skills were at a premium in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod qualifying feature Monday at Boone Speedway.

Seven of the top 10 finishers came from the back half of the 20-car field on opening night of the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Cenex. Scott Davis advanced 11 positions for the victory and will start his division record seventh main event on Saturday.

Cayden Carter started dead last but chased Davis across the stripe.

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 5) – A night with many firsts ended with Colby Springsteen in victory lane Monday at Boone Speedway.

Springsteen led the last 10 laps in winning the Deery Brothers Summer Series feature, on opening night of the IMCASpeedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Cenex.

The $2,000 victory was Springsteen’s IMCA Late Model tour career first. He’d started third, dropped back as far as eighth, then took charge after race-long leader Justin Reed came up lame and second-running Terry Neal exited on a lap 41 caution.

“This is the first full year we’ve followed the series. I never thought we’d be able to come and win the first time in this event,” Springsteen admitted. “It’s awesome.”

Kevin Sather chased Springsteen to the checkers and pole starter Dale Hackwell Jr. was third. Darrell DeFrance scored hard charger honors in the 23rd Super Nationals appearance of his career, advancing a dozen spots to round out the top four.

Andy Eckrich was fifth and now trails Ray Guss Jr. by three points in the race for the silver anniversary series championship.

The two-time defending Super Nationals champion, Guss qualified for the main event by winning his “B” and moved up nine places to eighth.

Reed started outside the front row and checked out on the field from the initial green, leading by a full straightaway just seven laps into the 50-lapper.

Hackwell, then McKenna gave chase but were hardly in the same time zone before the first caution, just before midway, erased Reed’s huge lead.

Reed continued to run in front while Sather and Neal worked their way to second and third, respectively. Springsteen was in the right place at the right time to capitalize on the restart that followed Reed’s mechanical misfortune and Neal’s exit.

“I was running fourth when I started thinking I’d try the bottom and then got passed by about five cars,” Springsteen said. “I thought the bottom was the way to go, like it was in the heat races, but it was a lot faster on top.”

McKenna won the $250 Sunoco Race Fuels feature qualifier drawing.

The next stop for the series is this Friday, Sept. 9 at Davenport Speedway’s All-Star Classic. Pit gates open at 4 p.m., the grandstand opens at 5:30 p.m., hot laps are at 6:30 p.m. and racing on the half-mile oval starts at 7 p.m.

The Labor Day program boasts a record-matching 182 Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods, along with 137 Hobby Stocks and 38 Late Models.

The 50-lap Deery Brothers Summer Series feature owns top billing at the Monday show and Ray Guss Jr. will start his drive for an unprecedented third consecutive title from the back row of his heat race.

Andy Eckrich, hot on Guss’ heels in the series point standings and fresh off his Sunday night triumph at the Pepsi USA Nationals, drew a front row start for the same heat.

Twenty-lap qualifying features tonight will determine the inside row of 10 cars for Saturday’s Hobby Stock and Northern SportMod main events. Also on the Monday docket are qualifying heats for the Arnold Motor Supply SportMod Race of Champions on Saturday.

A record, or record-tying, number of Northern SportMods has competed at Super Nationals every year since the division was added to the program at Boone in 2005.

Thirty-seven Stock Cars went through the tech line Monday afternoon. Qualifying for the Stocks and Modifieds begins on Wednesday.

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 5) – Pre-race tech inspection resumes bright and early Monday morning, opening day of the 29th annual IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Cenex.

More than 220 cars – 115 Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods and 107 Hobby Stocks – went through the tech tent at Boone Speedway on Sunday. Inspection for both those divisions starts again at 8 a.m. on Labor Day.

Deery Brothers Summer Series drivers make the trip to Boone from the rescheduled Pepsi USA Nationals at 34 Raceway in West Burlington. Their line in the tech tent opens at noon.

Current weather forecasts for the Sept. 5-10 Super Nationals don’t include the dreaded word rain but fans should be advised that it will be on the chilly side later in the evening each night.

Both Hobby Stocks and Northern SportMods qualify the inside row of 10 cars for their respective main events on Saturday. In addition to the entire Deery program, Monday’s card also includes all qualifying for the Arnold Motor Supply SportMod Race of Champions.

Monday’s schedule of events will be determined after total car counts in each of the three divisions are finalized.
