BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 6) – After a long run close to the front, Nick Meyer led the last two circuits of Tuesday night’s Hobby Stock qualifying feature at the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Cenex.

Meyer battled much of the 20-lapper with defending champion Jason Wilkinson and Brandon Pruitt. Mechanical problems took Wilkinson out of the running late in the contest.

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 6) – One of IMCA’s first families finally celebrated a Super Nationals championship at Boone Speedway.

Nathan Chandler won the inaugural main event for Mach-1 Sport Compacts Tuesday night at the IMCA Speedway MotorsSuper Nationals fueled by Cenex.

“We were talking about this earlier in the week. It always seemed like something would go wrong the night before Boone,” said Chandler, chased to the checkers by his brother Brad. “It feels really good to win the first championship for this division. It means a lot to all of us.”

Another brother, Dallas, was fifth while father Merv, the patriarch of the Chandler clan, finished 10th. Merv Chandler competed in the first Super Nationals in 1983 and made the big show another five times during his Modified career.

Despite a restart after pole starter John Whalen rolled to a stop on the backstretch, Nathan Chandler needed just two laps to speed from the 12th starting spot to third early on.

Despite getting briefly out of his preferred line, he caught Bill Whalen Jr. for second and made up ground in a hurry on leader Chuck Fullenkamp, taking over up front just before midway in the 20-lapper.

Nathan Chandler caught up with the back of the pack right before a lap 10 yellow. Brad Chandler passed Fullenkamp the next time around.

Fullenkamp and Gary Peiffer ran three-four the rest of the way while Dallas Chandler and cousin Jacob McVoy rounded out the top six.

“I knew Brad would race me clean, but I knew he wanted to win, too,” Nathan Chandler said. “We raced together three nights a week each year for the last three years and we race each other hard.”

Their regular tracks this season were CJ Speedway, West Liberty Raceway and Benton County Speedway.

Pausing during a post-race autograph session to acknowledge career-long support of several sponsors, Chandler noted that the champion of the first Super Nationals, Mike Schulte, also hailed from his hometown of Norway, Iowa.

“Maybe there’s something in the water,” he said.

Matt Echevarria was the hard charger advancing 134 positions to finish seventh.

The Monroeton, Pa., driver got a healthy $2,000 worth of help toward travel expenses from Dunn Hill 2 Speedway promoter Mark Spencer, who made good on a pre-season promise to help send the track’s first Modified champion to Super Nationals.

Sites, his father Eddie and brother Brad – who won the factory stock title at DH2 as a rookie this season – made a 16-hour tow to be part of America’s Racin’ Vacation.

“When Mark announced that he’d help the track champion get to Boone, I really focused on winning the championship. We’re really grateful for the help,” said Sites, who hotlapped for the first time on Monday. “This is one of the most impressive tracks I’ve seen. There’s a lot of bite and it’s very well taken care of.”

Also a two-time winner and the point leader in the World Products Empire State Series, he’ll be eligible to qualify for the Harris Auto Racing Race of Champions.

“It would be great to make the feature or the race of champions,” Sites said. “Super Nationals is totally unlike anything we’ve been part of before and I know we’ll have a lot of fun here.”

At last count, 49 Mach-1 Sport Compacts had gone through tech inspection. Six heats and three “B” features will set the field for the division’s first Super Nationals main event this evening.

Among the entries is Mankato, Minn.’s Nate Coopman, the national point leader and top rookie driver in standings coming to Boone. Also of note, his father Jerry raced in the Stock Car division at Super Nationals on three occasions.

“I’m used to the bigger tracks,” admitted Coopman, a weekend regular at Murray County Speedway, Arlington Raceway and Redwood Speedway. “We wanted to come here and have fun and hopefully make it into the feature.”

He’d raced in the hornet class at Fairmont before making the move to a Sport Compact. His travels this season included a trip to Benton County Speedway, home o the first-ever Super Nationals.
