Bushore passed race long leader Chad Porter with three circuits left in the 25-lapper. Both drivers maintained control after contact the next time around, then Bushore pulled ahead in the race to the checkers.

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 7) – Racing around a lapped car coming to the Friday checkers, Todd Reitzler raced his way onto the front row Saturday at the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals.

Chased by Marcus Fagan, Reitzler earned the outside pole of the Stock Car main event with a deft move down the front straightaway. He was one of four drivers doing time at the front of a qualifying feature that had cars running three-wide and more for much of its 25 laps.

Jim Larson led 10 of those circuits and ended in third. The rest of the top eight advancing to the big show were Shawn Havel, Stefan Sybesma, Luke Sathoff, Dean Wray and Devin Snellenberger.

Larson took the point from Perry Misner on the third lap. Three cautions near midway kept the field close before a Larson bobble opened the door for Sybesma.

Reitzler took charge the next time around; Fagan ran second the last nine laps. Havel and Snellenberger both qualified after advancing 18 positions.

Sybesma will start the Stock Car main event at Super Nationals for the third time, Fagan for the second. The addition of Reitzler, Larson, Havel, Sathoff, Wray and Snellenberger puts the number of first-time qualifiers for the division at 11.

Larson joins his son Dustin in the Saturday field while Snellenberger follows in the Super Nationals footsteps of his father Rod, a four-time qualifier for the main event.

Feature results – 1. Todd Reitzler, Grinnell; 2. Marcus Fagan, Adair; 3. Jim Larson, Rushmore, Minn.; 4. Shawn Havel, Algoma, Wis.; 5. Stefan Sybesma, Sanborn; 6.

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 7) – Drivers who took the initial green flag from the front and back rows impressed at Friday’s headline event during the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals.

Jordan Grabouski started in the middle of the front row and led every lap of the 30-lap special event for IMCA Modifieds.

Mark Elliott started last in the field of 30, used a midrace restart to race into the top three and nearly pulled even for the lead with three laps remaining.

IMCA’s defending national champion, Grabouski held on to win by little more than a car length. He earned $1,000 plus another $750 in lap money for his flag to flag efforts.

The win also puts him on the ballot for next year’s All-Star race.

“Starting up front obviously helps in a race with this many good drivers,” Grabouski said. “Mark did a heck of a job coming from 30th. I couldn’t have done it.”

Dustin Smith, Todd Dart and Jeremy Mills rounded out the top five. Mills was in a borrowed ride after rolling his own in heat race action earlier in the evening.

Jeremy Frenier started on the pole and was scored second on the each of the first two laps. Back-to-back yellows came out on laps three and four before Frenier and Dart began swapping the second spot.

Frenier secured the position and threatened Grabouski’s hold on the front, but saw his run end in a puff of smoke and came to rest on the top of turn two.

Elliott was in third when the next lap was scored and passed Smith for second right at the stripe on lap 20.

The front pair pulled away from that point, Elliott coming up just short in his still remarkable bid.

“I could see him coming out of (turn) four and I knew I had to get down further on the track,” Grabouski said afterwatds, trophy in hand. “I was just trying to protect what I had. Hats off to Mark for racing me clean.”

Twenty-eight starters were elected through Facebook and IMCA website voting. Rounding out the field were Frenier, the top driver in national points, and Cory Sample, the driver with the most feature wins not already in the field.

All-Star candidates included winners of sanctioned Modified events paying $1,000 or more to win and 2011 national, regional and state champions.

J.J. Wise had been elected to the All-Star field but was injured in an accident and unable to compete. He conducted the draw for starting position, then waved a green flag autographed by his fellow All-Stars to start the race.

Feature results – 1. Jordan Grabouski, Beatrice, Neb.; 2. Mark Elliott, Webster City; 3. Dustin Smith, Lake City; 4. Todd Dart, Algoma, Wis.; 5. Jeremy Mills, Garner; 6.

Roger Holder knows how to go fast in a straight line.

He’s still learning how to go fast and turn left, and he’s taking notes at Super Nationals.

The Bakersfield, Calif., driver is in his second full season in the IMCA Modified division. He came to the full-bodied class after 20-plus seasons and numerous drag racing championships.

“I borrowed a hobby stock from a buddy of mine, raced it once and thought it was too slow,” Holder said. “I asked him what was faster and he said an IMCA Modified.

“From the stands it looked like it wasn’t so hard to do,” he added. “Wrong.”

Holder’s “other” race car is a 2000 Camaro. He’s traveled extensively on the West Coast and to Texas and Georgia to compete.

“I went to a race in Georgia and there were about 80 other cars. You race one guy at a time in drag racing,” Holder said. “The number of cars and the level of competition here is very high.”

There are a couple more subtle differences between drag racing and dirt track racing that only time can alleviate.

“I’m still learning setups and motor combinations,” said Holder. “I don’t have the experience yet to know what to change when I get off the track.”
