BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 5) – Inches made the difference when Donavon Smith won the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals Stock Car championship in 2009.

That modest margin of victory was the same in Wednesday night’s qualifying feature at Boone Speedway.

Electronic timing showed Smith beat Dan Mackenthun to the checkers by all of .043 of a second in the race for the pole start in Saturday’s main event. Wayne Gifford was third, a similar fraction of a second behind Mackenthun.

Smith had started the 25-lapper from the 16th spot, Mackenthun from 11th.

The rest of the top eight finishers advancing to Saturday’s inside row are Casey Werkmeister, Trent Murphy, Jason Ward, Jason DeShaw and Abe Huls.

Werkmeister led the first 17 circuits. Both Gifford and Smith drove by following a lap 18 restart. Two-time Super Nationals champion Jeff Anderson had started on the pole, ran in the top four most of the way and, along with Damon Murty, got caught up and slowed down in traffic on lap 21.

Gifford was a half a car length ahead of Smith taking the white flag. The finish was so close that just a second separated first from fifth place.

Smith will start his sixth straight main event and Murphy his fifth consecutive feature on Saturday night. Mackenthun and Ward are now three-time qualifiers.

Gifford, Werkmeister, DeShaw and Huls all are in the Stock Car show for the first time. Huls is the first driver from Illinois to qualify for the Stock Car main at Super Nationals.

Feature results – 1. Donavon Smith, Lake City; 2. Dan Mackenthun, Hamburg, Minn.; 3. Wayne Gifford, Boone; 4. Casey Werkmeister, North Platte, Neb.; 5. Trent Murphy, Jefferson; 6. Jason Ward, Sioux City; 7. Jason DeShaw, Hopkinton; 8. Abe Huls, Carthage, Ill.; 9. Josh Daniels, Des Moines; 10. Dustin Larson, Worthington, Minn.; 11. John Oliver Jr., Danville; 12.
That number includes 251 Modifieds, 189 Stock Cars, 180 Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods, 153 Hobby Stocks, 55 Mach-1 Sport Compacts and 42 Late Models.

The previous event mark of 843 had been established last year. Two divisional car count records were set and another equaled in 2012.

One hundred and eighty Stock Cars were entered in 2004; there were 49 entries for the Sport Compact debut last year.

Super Nationals in 2004 also saw 153 Hobby Stocks on track.

“It’s no surprise that Super Nationals keeps getting bigger and better,” noted IMCA Vice President of Operations Brett Root. “Super Nationals isn’t just a dirt track race, it’s the premier event bar none in dirt track racing.”

Tom Lathrop of Ottumwa scored a rare repeat, earning Sybesma Graphics Best Looking Car honors in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod division for a second straight year.

He’d won with a football theme last year, and was going to stick with purple in his tribute to American servicemen and women even before IMCA announced that requirement for the contest.

Lathrop’s brother served in the Marines and an uncle was in the Army during the Vietnam War. He’s got a friend active in Wounded Warriors and will donate his winnings from the week to that deserving organization.

Northern SportMods have flourished in their first season on the West Coast and Keith Brown Jr. of Pittsburg is one of two California drivers in the class at Super Nationals. He’ll take the green flag from 28th in today’s last-chance qualifier.

“We have made major changes during the time we’ve been here,” he said. “We were nowhere in the ballpark when we got here on Monday but we’ve come leaps and bounds since then.”

A former hobby stock and modified driver – he has a tattoo of an open-wheeled car on his right bicep – Brown took a five-year break from the sport before finding a new home in the seat of a SportMod.

With new sanctions in his home state next season, he’s hoping to make a serious bid for the national crown.

Super Nationals is the event to race with the best and Brown was looking forward to seeing how he measured up again today.

“This has been a lot of fun for us,” he said, “But Super Nationals has by far been the biggest learning curve I’ve ever had to take in.”

Sponsored in part by EQ, Brown is a third-generation driver. His father races modifieds and his grandfather Bill raced in a sportsman class, earning a California state championship.

Jeremy Frenier brings a career-best 14 IMCA Modified feature wins and the Phillips County Raceway crown to Boone Speedway. He wants to gain new accolades this week at Boone.

The Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational candidate is also eligible to qualify for the Harris Auto Racing Race of Champions. Punching his ticket to the big show on Saturday would be something else entirely.

“Probably 50 percent of the improvement I made this year was seat time,” said Fenier, who landed a plum pit spot just off staging. “The other 50 percent was learning setup and motor combinations.”

He’s got the ultimate reference source in father-in-law to be David Murray Jr., IMCA’s all-time career wins leader. Frenier and fiancée Sarah will tie the knot next September, after Super Nationals and before the Flatlander.

He’s already got 10 feature wins, a pair of checkers in the Bruns Memorial Series and the Powder Werks North Star Series title to his credit this season, but you can’t blame Dustin Larson for wanting more.

Larson made the Saturday night show in the Hobby Stocks in 2010 and the Stock Cars in 2011, starting on the front row both times.

“There are so many good cars here I’m just hoping to make the show,” said Larson, admitting to some Wednesday afternoon butterflies. “Of course I’d like to win it. What would be really special is if all three of us (his father Jim and brother Jeffrey also race Stock Cars) can get in the main event.”

The Larsons share shop space outside Rushmore, Minn. After winning the season-opening special at Algona Raceway, Dustin was a regular at Fairmont and visited other tracks around his home state.
