Dickerson, and Musselman take first wins in 2013
August 3, 2013
The fans were treated to great weather, and great racing on Saturday night at the Boone Speedway. The pits were packed with 152 race cars, and the crowd not only got to witness the first ever running of the Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks at the speedway, but another added bonus on the night was a special Modified Chassis 10-lap shoot out race, pitting Harris against Victory. Two new names went in the record books as first time winners for 2013 in the Modified and SportMod classes too.
Before the heat races began, the Chassis Challenge was held— The winner taking home a $1,000, and each lap leader earning money that had been put up. The winner of ALL the lap money plus the 10-lap race was Randy Havlik. By leading all ten laps, Havlik earned over $1,300.
The regular feature racing began with the IMCA Hobby Stocks. Shannon Anderson rose to the top in this one—taking the lead away from Michael Powell at lap nine and motoring unchallenged to the checkers. Matt Sorenson, last week’s winner, came from starting sixteenth, to take the runner up spot. Third went to earlier leader Powell, fourth was Andy Coffman and Matt Hudspeth rounded out the top five.
It was 15-laps in the A main for the MADCRA Mod Lites. Joel Keenan passed Travis Stensland to take over the lead at lap seven and was appearing to be on his way to capture his first win of the season. However by lap twelve, there was Josh May knocking at the door in second after starting back in twelfth. The closing laps were tight as May tried maneuvering around the outside of Keenan only to have the door shut—until that fateful last lap. As the checkers were displayed, May made his swing around the outside of Keenan and snatched the win. Bryan Zehm, who came from row six, followed May and Keenan to take third, fourth went to early leader Travis Stensland and Randy Bryan completed the top five. This was May’s third win of the season at the track.
There were eleven Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks on hand, making their initial appearance at the Boone Speedway. Bret Moyer got the advantage at the drop of the green in their 15-lap feature. It soon turned into a three truck race, as Moyer fought to keep the top spot with Pat Fagen and his brother Brad Moyer. Fagen got the lead, but only for a brief moment, then bobbling just enough to allow both Moyers around him. Bret Moyer established himself in that point position for good at lap five, fending off the advances of Brad Moyer the rest of the distance to the checkers. Bret Moyer secured his name in the record books as taking the first ever Dirt Truck race at the Boone Speedway, his brother Brad having to settle for second. Third place was taken by Rick Clark, fourth went to Pat Fagen and Tony Moro rounded out the top five.
The IMCA Northern SportMods came next for an 18-lap run. Michael Murphy and Randy Roberts were at the head of the pack by lap six and continued that way as the laps wound down. Roberts was looking to the inside for any way around leader Murphy but was not having much success. Then with just two laps to go, disaster hit when a lap car in front of them lost the handle, and collected both the leader Murphy and second place Roberts. Taylor Musselman was the lucky recipient of the lead on the restart with a green-white-checkered finish looming. As the race restarted, Musselman held his lead and motored home to his first win at the track in 2013. Cody Hennings took the runner up spot, Johnathon Logue finished third. Fourth went to point leader Eric Elliott who came from starting in row six, and Paul Nagle took fifth.
The 20-lap Modified feature found Kelly Lyons, Russ Dickerson and Jake Durbin putting on the show for the fans past the half way mark. Lyons’ night would end when he suddenly exited into the infield, leaving Dickerson to now fend off Joel Bushore and Durbin. Bushore, who had come from starting dead last in the 20-car field, had steadily been

working his way toward the front of the pack, but could get no further than to finish in second behind winner Dickerson. Jake Durbin held on to finish in third, just ahead of Jimmy Gustin in fourth and Kyle Brown in fifth. This was Dickerson’s first win for 2013 at the Boone Speedway.
An abundance of yellow flags flew in the night ending 18-lap Stock Car feature. Gary Bass led much of this one as he held off Mike Goldsberry. There was company behind them most of the time as well as Josh Daniels, Jay Schmidt and Trent Murphy battled for position to their rear. A final yellow flag flew at lap fourteen, and on the restart, Goldsberry made his move around Bass to take the lead. Those final laps saw Goldsberry stretch his lead and take a comfortable win at the checkers. Josh Daniels took the runner up spot, holding off Trent Murphy, who had started fourteenth, and Gary Bass, as they finished third and fourth. Last week’s winner Jay Schmidt came from starting in twelfth to round out the top five. Goldsberry made this his second win in the 2013 season.
Next week, August 10, will be another night of regular racing in all five divisions. Hot laps 6:45 and racing at 7:30.
