Gustin grabs Modified win at Boone

May 7, 2016

Racing won out over the raindrops at Boone on Saturday night, after last week’s rain out.  The fans were treated to a great show in all five divisions.  Jimmy Gustin would grab his first win in the Modified class, as did Randy Roberts in the SportMod division, Trent Murphy in the Stock Cars, and Cory Dennis in the Mod Lite’s.  Only the Hobby Stock class would see Solomon Bennett repeat a win this season.

Cory Dennis won his first feature of the year in the Mod Lites, passing Justin Rankin at lap ten and then held off runner up Bryan Zehm at the finish line.  Charlie Brown started tenth and finished third, fourth went to Randy Bryan and Joe Glick came from twelfth to finish in fifth.

In the IMCA Northern SportMod feature, it was Randy Roberts snatching the lead at lap four, and pulling away from the field.  A yellow flew at lap sixteen of the eighteen lap event, but it did not prove to be a game changer for Roberts. He kept his lead to the checkers, scoring his first victory at Boone this season.  Jonathan Logue moved from starting seventh, to finish in second place, Ryan Rose was third, Jake McBirnie took fourth and Brandon Williams rounded out the top five.

Solomon Bennett made it two in a row visiting victory lane in the IMCA Hobby Stocks.  Bennett fought past Jordan Peters to take the lead at lap seven and kept the lead to take the win by a comfortable margin.  Chad Legere got around Peters with a lap to go, as they went second and third.  Eleventh place starter Matt McDonald finished fourth and Eric Stanton finished fifth from starting in twelfth position.

In the IMCA Modified 20-lap feature, it was Joel Bushore showing the way, leading until lap fourteen.  That would be when Jimmy Gustin and Mike VanGenderen, who had started side by side in row five,

would come calling.  Gustin made his way around Bushore and into the lead, and not to be outdone, VanGenderen also got around Bushore and began hunting down leader Gustin.  It wasn’t to be on this night however, as Gustin took the win, his first of the year at Boone Speedway.  VanGenderen, who had won back on April 23rd, finished a close second.   Bushore held on to third, Russ Dickerson took fourth and fifth went to eleventh place starter, Jon Snyder.

The IMCA Stock Car feature completed the night’s racing action with their 18-lap main event.  Veteran racer Robert Stofer led the field through the first ten laps.  Then ninth place starter,Trent Murphy took command.  Murphy stretched his lead, taking the win in comfortable fashion.  Stofer scored the runner up position, and pole sitter Cory Piffer finished third.  Donavon Smith took fourth place, and Andrew Knode, fifth.

Racing continues next Saturday, May 14.  Grandstands open at 6 p.m., with hot laps at 6:45 and racing at 7:30.
