May 2, 2015

It was back to the regular racing schedule at the Boone Speedway on Saturday night with a repeat winner in the SportMod division, while all other classes had first time winners for 2015.  The races were completed before the lightning flashing to the west, brought rain.

Bryan Zehm led all 15-laps of the Mod Lite feature to take the win, his first of the season at Boone.  He was chased most of the distance by second place

finisher Dave Schmalzried.  Third place went to last week’s winner James May, his son Josh May was fourth and opening week winner Travis Stensland, was fifth.

Sam Wieben started fifteenth in the IMCA Northern SportMod 18-lap feature, and with an impressive run, led all but the first handful of laps. Wieben skillfully threaded his way through lap traffic and secured his second win in as many weeks at the speedway.  Jerry Hinton finished in the runner up spot, third went to Dustin Dalton, fourth to Ben Wilson and season opener winner Doug Smith came from eleventh starting spot to round out the top five.

The 12-lap IMCA Hobby Stocks had trouble finding their racing rhythm in the opening laps as two caution flew.  After a second restart, it was Matt Hudspeth holding down the point position but he soon had company in Chad Legere now on his tail.  Legere, who had started eighth, wasted little time in snatching the lead, taking command at lap six.  He would keep the lead all the way to the checkers, scoring his first ever win at the Boone Speedway.  John Watson took his ride from the twelfth starting spot to a runner up finish, just ahead of Eric Stanton in third.  Aaron Rudolph and Ryan Wells were fourth and fifth.

The IMCA Modified 20-lap feature was led the entire distance by outside front row starter, Richie Gustin.  Gustin didn’t let two cautions bother him on his way to his first win at Boone this season.  There was a lot of shuffling going on behind him however, and the final laps were a battle!  Russ Dickerson swung to the topside, making it work to his advantage and ended the night with a second place finish.  Jimmy Gustin, always a hard charger, finished third after starting eleventh, Mike VanGenderen started ninth and finished fourth and Eric Elliott completed the top five.

Jerry Gifford quickly took the lead in the IMCA Stock Car feature that ended the night’s racing.  Gifford took the lead from his fourth starting spot, scoring the lead on lap one.  From there on, he held firmly to the lead all the way to the checkers and the win.  Jay Schmidt did some reeling in of the leader, but could do no better than a second place finish.  Third went to veteran racer Terry Pruitt who started tenth, fourth was eleventh place starter Donavon Smith, and Trent Murphy, the track’s Frostbuster winner, was scored in fifth.

Next Saturday night, May 9, regular season racing continues in all five classes.  Hot laps are 6:45 and racing at 7:30.
