VanGenderen wins second of season at Boone

June 18, 2011

It was a beautiful Saturday evening for mid-season championships at the Boone Speedway.   The track was wide and fast, allowing for door-to-door action much of the night. Two drivers were first time winners for 2011 while others made return visits to victory lane.

The Mod-Lites started off the feature racing and a first time winner would emerge.  Dusty Masolini picked up his first win of the season as he held off the charges of Jeff Stensland.  Following Stensland to finish third was Bryan Zehm, fourth place went to Randy Bryan and Joel Keenan rounded out the top five.

The IMCA Northern SportMods ran an 18-lap caution free feature.  Tara Longnecker led early until Ty Luellen took over the top spot.  By the halfway mark, Brian Miller positioned himself into second place and wasn’t done yet.  He passed Luellen for the lead and then pulled away.  Miller finally got that elusive first win of the year,

something that had been so near in the past, only to slip away.  Stacey Clark came home in second after passing Luellen, who finished third.  Fourth went to Doug Smith and Randy Roberts was fifth.

The IMCA modified 20-lap feature put the “Flying Dutchman” Mike VanGenderen in a return visit to victory lane.  VanGenderen led most of the race with Jake Durbin hot on his bumper.  Durbin took the runner up spot and Jimmy Gustin came from starting twelfth to grab the third position.  Fourth went to Denny Rosbenberg and Randy Havlik finished fifth.

The stock car 18-lap feature went to a hard-charging Alan VanGorp.  VanGorp ran the bottom to overtake Rod Richards with three laps to go and took the checkers for the second time this year.  Jay Schmidt took advantage of the top side and passed Richards at the flag to grab second.  Richards was third and Robert Stofer and Cory Bushnell finished fourth and fifth respectively.

The 12-lap hobby stock feature concluded the feature events.  John Watson wasted no time in getting to the front, taking the lead by lap three. Watson pulled away for the win, his second of the regular season.  Aaron Rudolph ran a distant second and Eric Stanton came from qualifying through the B main, to take third.  Fourth went to Brandon Brinton and Tim Hadley finished in fifth.

Next week will be another regular points event with racing in all five divisions.  Join us for more exciting racing action at the Boone Speedway.
