Burke, Schmidt nab first wins of the season, May, Mills, and Knutson repeat at Boone

BOONE, IA (May 18, 2025) – Iowa’s Action Track continued its weekly campaign in the heart of Iowa on Saturday Night. 131 cars checked in to do battle and A-Main Features kicked off with the IMCA Mod Lite Division. It was like the parting of the Red Sea for Josh May in his number 99 machine as he started seventh on the grid and was up battling for the lead on lap 1. Once action was stopped for a red flag due to Cole Paul getting tipped over, that restacked the field and we had another showdown between Austin Gray and May. This time, however, May would be able to hold off the charge from Gray and pick up the win. They were followed by Garrison Anderson, Colby Oberembt, and Tracen Glick.

Next to the track were the Elmquist Towing IMCA Sport Mods. From the start of the race, Santa Maria, California’s Braden Claborn got the early advantage. He methodically worked the bottom side of the speedway as the laps clicked down. The race continued on behind him as Chris Burke in his 25 machine stuck to the top side and after having a five car disadvantage saw gains on the leader. Burke would continue his chase eventually running down Claborn and doing battle for the lead. He would work his way around the outside and into the lead. After a late race caution, Burke managed to pull away while Cory Pestotnik worked past Claborn for the second spot. Pestotnik and Claborn were followed by Camdan Vincent and Gage Hilgenberg rounding out the top 5.

“There are no moral victories starting on the pin at Boone and finishing second, so I had to park this thing to feel good about myself,” said Burke in Victory lane. This would be Burke’s first win at Boone since 2023.

Following the Sport Mods would be the IMCA Modifieds, and would they put on a show. Boone’s Joel Bushore would lead from the drop of the green. As the laps continued on, Clear Lake’s Jeremy Mills would run down Bushore for the race lead. Mills and Bushore would make contact in turns one and two racing hard for the top position with Mills then inheriting the race lead. Problems for Bushore on the next lap as he would exit off the top of the racetrack while running in the second spot. As the laps worked down, the cautions continued to restack the field. Restarts were a key contributor to Cody Laney working his way up the second position. Jake McBirnie would battle up front all race before ending up third, and Izac Mallicoat would advance 12 spots to fourth. Mike VanGendren would round out the top five. Jason Bass was the hard charger working up 14 spots to seventh.

IMCA Stock Cars were next to take the Speedway. Rowdee VanGendren and Todd VanEaton would lead the field to the green flag. Jay Schmidt who started in the 12th spot would quickly make hay early and work his way into the top three. Schmidt, who got upside down the night before, worked tirelessly on their car to get it ready for Saturday. The hard work paid off for Schmidt and crew as Schmidt was able to work his way past the top two cars from there and inherit the race lead. Johnathon Logue also worked the bottom of the race surface to get the runner up position advancing nine spots. Doug Smith ripped the cushion around the top side of the track to get to third. Josh Daniels would go a plus 11 to fourth and Buck Schafroth would round out the top five.

Pickett Salvage IMCA Hobby Stocks were the nightcap of the evening. Slater, Iowa’s Eric Knutson would claim the Moffitt Ford twin checkers by race end after catfishing the bottom side of the speedway picking off 9 cars in his wake. He was followed by Kolby Sabin who continues to have great runs each week. Joe Wollenhaupt, Solomon Bennett, and Joe Doran rounded out the top five.

Racing continues this weekend with our IMCA Stars Mod Lite Cornbelt Clash $500 to win event, as well as the IMCA Anniversary special for IMCA Sport Mods and Modifieds. IMCA Sport Mods will race for $1000 to win and the Modifieds will race for $2000 to win. Continue to find more information at www.raceboone.com or find us on our social media pages.
